Happy Valentines Day from MIT

Happy Valentine’s Day from MIT In case you havent realized it yet, Im going to let you guys all in on a secret: MIT Admissions loves you. No, really. I know the L-word gets thrown around a lot these days, which I think is sort of sad, since in the long run that only degrades the full impact and true value of what used to be (and in some ways, still is) a very powerful word. But I see the entire admissions process, all the way from finalizing decisions to these very blogs, as quite simply a labor of love. Everyone in the Admissions Office, from all the admissions officers to the financial aid wizards to the educational counselors to even Stu himself, could have chosen a different career path but they didnt. Instead, they dedicate the full measure of their time, passion, and energies to admitting the best students they can, to making CPW such an amazing experience, to dreaming up MyMIT and the blogs, and to everything else that goes on behind the scenes. I dont know about youbut at least to me, that says a lot. To switch gears slightly, I applied to MIT in the regular action cycle so unfortunately, I missed out on some of the cool traditions that the Admissions Department has cooked up for its Early Action admits. If I had known about The Tube beforehand, maybe I would have applied to MIT early, but cest la vie it all worked out in the end. And as an added benefit, now I get to experience these same traditions from the other side, as a blogger! In addition to The Tubes, MIT also sends the Early Action admits a couple other fun treats between December and May, when the big mailing to all matriculated students goes out (including such goodies as how to get your MIT email address and lots of information about MITs eleven dorms). One of these treats is a snowflake-shaped holiday card, with a message about how MIT students are all unique, just like snowflakes. (Its not only cute, its true!) The other gift, arriving in mailboxes across the nation just in time for everyone to celebrate todays excuse for the industry to make lots of money selling chocolate, roses, and other gifts *cough* Did I just say that? Sorry, must have slipped out. Im not that much of a cynic in real life, promise Anyway. The other gift, as you can probably guess by now, was a Valentines Day card, signed by all the bloggers and complete with both a molecular diagram of chocolate and one of the most hilarious love poems ever written. Corny? Maybe. Ridiculous? Slightly. 100% MIT? Definitely. After spending about two hours signing cards, I resolved to blog about this unique aspect of the MIT admissions process, since I think MIT would send Valentines Day cards to all its admitted students, if they only knew who they were yet. (On that note, if youre an RA applicant and stressing out about college dont panic. I know nothing I can say will alleviate what youre feeling now, but youve finished your applications, and the worst is over. Dont think so much about waitinggo out enjoy the last, and hopefully best, semester of your high school career!) Although I could have just taken a photograph of the card myself, I realized that would probably be pretty boring. After all, you see my face at the top of every entry (although that photo isnt very accurate anymore, since my hair is now much longer). I thought to myself, why not take this opportunity introduce you to a few new faces? So I asked the good folks in the MIT Class of 2012 Facebook group to send in pictures of themselves posing with their cards. Voila! First up we have Allison 12 from Massachusetts, who opted to include all the snow New Englands been getting lately in her photo: As an aside, we actually studied the chocolate molecule (technically theobromine) in my organic chemistry class the other day, which made me chuckle. Next is Kelly 12 from Virginia, going for the double whammy by showcasing both cards. The astute observer will be quick to notice the MIT shirt shes wearing nice choice, Kelly! Samantha 12 somehow hit the jackpot and ended up receiving two cards in the mail! In her own words, I think you guys sent me two Valentines Day cards by accident, but Id like to think it was on purpose. :) So in case anyone was wondering where an extra card went, its right here with me in Maryland. Sam would give Ben a big V-Day hug right now, if she could. Maybe during CPW Shannon 12 of Michigan went for the classic card and Tube pose. A girl, a Tube, and chocolate. Sounds like Shamarah 12. Michelle 12 loves MIT almost as much as she loves chocolate. Notice the MIT 2008 poster in the background! Nothing will stand between Donald 12 and his chocolate. Silly Donald, thats not real theobromine! ;) Its raining men! Kevin 12 is proud to be an Engineer. Look!† She pulled down the blanket and aimed baby Sophie’s bottom at him like she might unleash a fusillade of weapons-grade poopage such as the guileless Beta Male had never seen. Charlie jumped back – a lean and nimble thirty, he was – then, once he realized that the baby wasn’t loaded, he straightened the lapels on his tweed jacket in a gesture of righteous indignation. â€Å"You could have removed her tail in the delivery room and we’d never know.† He didn’t know. He’d been asked to leave the delivery room, first by the ob-gyn and finally by Rachel. (â€Å"Him or me,† Rachel said. â€Å"One of us has to go.†) In Rachel’s room, Charlie said: â€Å"If they removed her tail, I want it. She’ll want it when she gets older.† â€Å"Sophie, your Papa isn’t really insane. When Roderick extended his marriage proposal to her in the company of all, Malcolm detected Ellen's deep disquiet, but before he could speak, her father interceded, explaining tactfully that such a union would be a political misalliance; Roderick was a sworn enemy of the King, while he, Douglas, in spite of his outlawed status, still loved his monarch. The great chieftain hated the King and could not understand Douglas' loyalty. Now his disappointment at losing Ellen rose to intensify Roderick's anger. He sent out a terrible signal - a fiery cross summoning his Clan Alpine to war. As the cross was carried over the rocky highlands, all the clansmen rallied to support their chieftain. She promised to help him escape, though she confessed that her heart belonged to Malcolm Graeme. The knight remained determined to help her save her father, however. He presented her with a ring from the Saxon royalty, saying that it would help her in her journey through Lowland territory and gain her an audience with King James. Fitz-James departed, still following his guide, Red Murdoch. Soon they came upon Blanche, a poor, crazed woman living in the wilds. Long ago, on her wedding day, Clan Alpine had captured her and killed her bridegroom. From his green hunting attire, Blanche recognized Fitz-James as a fellow Lowlander. The rules consist of five exclusive rights given to copyright owners under the Copyright Act. These laws are created and managed to prevent others from reproducing work or works created and owned by another person. No one can reproduce, publicly display the work, or distribute the work without the owner’s expressed permission. As a result, the web page author or authors need to be careful not to copy the work of others. This issue is so serious that the Internet service provider can be found liable for the copyright infringement even if they are not directly engaged in the copied materials, lawsuits will be implemented, and possible prison time can happen. Images If a web designer decides to obtain an image from the web and alter the image using a drawing or painting program, this will still infringe on the copyright laws. It is best to start from scratch and not alter another image from an original piece of work. Altering an image in this way is called derivative work. Taking an image from third parties is also taboo. Once the original image is fixed on a hard drive for the first time, it is protected by copyright laws. Any unauthorized copying of a protected image is an infringement of the creator’s copyright privilege. The originator can deem the image to be exempted through fair use, though. But unless the originator expresses this, it is not the case. Some licensed images, for example, the Internet Explorer logo may be copied, but the user must accept the terms of license first. In accepting the license, the user is excepting the terms within such license to use the image. The image will most likely not be able to be altered in any way. It can be copied as a link, only to a certain destination, but the web designer needs to be careful not to use it in a different way. He or she needs to follow the license agreement to use the logo with the link. Clip art is often provided with many applications. These images do not fall under the copyright laws as long as the web designer follows the terms in the license of the program. There are free images offered on the Internet. Some websites offer images to be used by others, but there are often stipulations of the use of the image. There are often terms proposed by the image creators. Most likely, the creators of the image want credit to be given to the author, including a link back to the author’s site. But if the image did not originally come from the creator, these images are already infringed upon; therefore they can not be used. Text Text on a website follows the same laws and stipulations as images. If the text is original, the copyright laws will not be infringed upon, but if the text is copied from another party, it will be illegal to display. The only exception is, if the originator gave expressed permission to use the text. Full credit to the author must be given. Another exception of the rule would be if the text was given under an expressed terms, of license agreement. A web designer should never assume a â€Å"free-use work† in a free in a public domain without independent investigations, showing that the work is from the original author. Scripts Developing any kind of scripts is time-consuming and complex, but they also fall under copyright laws. Many programmers and other users have made their scripts and applets available for the public. In this case, use is allowed as long as any requirements set fourth by the programmer are followed. Copyright laws are very complex to understand, but as long as a web designer understands these five rules, the work they create will most likely not violate the Copyright Act. The History of Elevators From Top to Bottom By definition, an elevator is a platform or an enclosure raised and lowered in a vertical shaft to transport people and freight. The shaft contains the operating equipment, motor, cables, and accessories. Primitive elevators were in use as early as the third century B.C.E. and were  operated by human, animal, or water wheel power. In 1743, a counter-weighted, man-powered personal elevator was built for King Louis XV, connecting his apartment in Versailles with that of his mistress, Madame de Chà ¢teauroux, whose quarters were one floor above his own. 19th Century Elevators From about the middle of the 19th century, elevators were powered, often steam-operated,  and were used for transporting materials in factories, mines, and warehouses. In 1823, two architects named Burton and Homer built an ascending room, as they called it. This crude elevator was used to lift paying tourists to a platform for a panoramic view of London. In 1835, architects Frost and Stuart built the Teagle, a belt-driven, counter-weighted and steam-driven lift was developed in England. In 1846, Sir William Armstrong introduced the hydraulic crane and by the early 1870s, hydraulic machines began to replace the steam-powered elevator. The hydraulic elevator is supported by a heavy piston, moving in a cylinder and is operated by the water (or oil) pressure produced by pumps. The Elevator Brakes of Elisha Otis In 1852, American inventor Elisha Otis moved to Yonkers, New York  to work for the bedstead firm of Maize Burns. It was the owner of the company, Josiah Maize, that inspired Otis to start designing elevators.  Maize needed a new hoisting device to lift heavy equipment to the upper floor of his factory. In 1853, Otis demonstrated a freight elevator equipped with a safety device to prevent falling in case a supporting cable broke. This increased public confidence in such devices. In 1853, Otis established a company for manufacturing elevators and patented a steam elevator. For Josiah Maize, Otis invented something he called an  Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus Elevator Brake and demonstrated his new invention to the public  at the Crystal Palace Exposition in New York  in 1854. During the demonstration, Otis hoisted the elevator car to the top of the building and  then deliberately cut the elevator hoisting cables. However, instead of crashing, the elevator car was stopped because of the brakes that Otis had invented. While Otis did not actually invent the first elevator, his brakes, used in modern elevators, made skyscrapers a practical reality. In 1857, Otis and the Otis Elevator Company began manufacturing passenger elevators. A steam-powered passenger elevator was installed by the Otis Brothers in a five-story department store owned by E.W.  Haughtwhat Company of Manhattan. It was the worlds first public elevator. Elisha Otis Biography Elisha Otis was born on Aug. 3, 1811, in Halifax, Vermont, the youngest of six children. At the age of twenty, Otis moved to Troy, New York and worked as a wagon driver. In 1834, he married Susan A. Houghton and had two sons with her. Unfortunately, his wife died, leaving Otis a young widower with two small children.In 1845, Otis moved to Albany, New York after marrying his second wife, Elizabeth A. Boyd. Otis found a job as a master mechanic making bedsteads for Otis Tingley Company. It was here that Otis first began inventing. Among his first inventions were a railway safety brake, rail turners for speeding the making of rails for four-poster beds and the improved turbine wheel.Otis died of diphtheria on April 8th, 1861 in Yonkers, New York. Electric Elevators Electric elevators came into  use toward the end of the 19th century. The first one was built by the German inventor Werner von Siemens in 1880. Black inventor, Alexander Miles patented an electric elevator (U.S. pat#371,207) on Oct. 11, 1887.

The cardinal increase has been with regard to carbon dioxide. This gas has its origins in plant and animal respiration and decomposition, natural fires and active volcanoes. Furthermore, the carbon dioxide converted to oxygen, via photosynthesis is replenished by these natural sources of carbon dioxide (Geisel 1465). The increase in carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases has been established by scientists, who drilled holes in the earth’s geographical poles and procured ice core samples that clearly indicated this enhancement. In a manner that is akin to the rings found in trees, ice core samples exhibit rings, which permit accurate dating.

They have had long â€Å"discussions† via email about the benefits and drawbacks of living in the US, a capitalist system, versus living in Belgium, a socialist economic system. Jean-Paul defended Belgium’s system. What do you think Julie would say about the benefits of living in the US and the drawbacks of living in Belgium, and how would Jean-Paul respond? Explain Julie’s position and Jean-Paul’s response in an essay format that is at least 250 words in length. I would say that the U.S. benefits would be better because it’s more opportunity and you progress more into your career versus getting benefits outside the U.S. I mean Arnold Swarzenegger said it better on 106 and Park. He said that’s how his career had started and had taken off ever since he was 21 when he had won Mr. Universe. With the capitalist system in the U.S. you have the right to own private property, the right to own a business and keep all that business’s profits, the right to freedom of completion, and the right to freedom of choice. Under capitalism most factors of production and distribution are owned by individuals. The capitalist system is the foundation of the United States. With the socialist economic system the system should be owned by the government and is based on premise and other businesses. The major benefit for a socialist economic system is social equality because the government takes income no matter if you are rich or poor. Also education can be free through college, free health care, and free child care. If you are in a socialist country you get longer vacations, less hours, and more employee benefits, but capitalism prevails. A Marxist society would have no private property rights and goods produced in it. It would be distributed among the citizens. The U.S. is taking baby steps on controlling socialism. Socialism creates more equality than capitalism and it tends to result in fewer inventions. I would think Julie would like the benefits better in the United States and he would of responded with good intentions on the United States Benefits.

What Belongs in an Individual Education Program

Individual Education Program, or IEP, is a long-range (yearly) planning document for exceptional students used in conjunction with a teachers class plans. Each student has unique needs that must be recognized and planned for in the academic program so he or she can function as effectively as possible. This is where the IEP comes into play. Placement of students may vary depending upon their needs and exceptionalities. A student may be placed in: a regular classroom and receive program modificationsa regular classroom and receive program modifications plus additional support from the special education teachera regular classroom for a part of the day and a special education classroom for the remainder of the daya special education classroom with a variety of direct and indirect support from special education teachers and consultative support staffa treatment program or residential program with complete and ongoing support from a variety of staff. What Should Be in an IEP? Regardless of the placement of the student, an IEP will be in place. The IEP is a working document, which means evaluation comments should be added throughout the year. If something in the IEP isnt working, It should be noted along with suggestions for improvement.
